Strella Aesthetics

Before and after SkinPen microneedling treatment showing improvement in acne scars and smoother skin at Strella Medical Aesthetics in Trooper, PA.

Most patients need 3 to 6 microneedling sessions. Most clinics spaced it 4 to 6 weeks apart( like at our Clinic Strella Medical Aesthetics). The right number depends on your scar type, how deep your scars are, and how your skin heals. Mild scars may improve in as few as 3 sessions. Deeper scars, like ice pick or boxcar scars, often need 6 or more.

Why Microneedling Takes More Than One Session

Microneedling makes tiny, controlled injuries in your skin. This triggers your body to make more collagen and elastin. Acne scars sit below the surface of your skin. Smoothing them out takes time. Your skin needs several sessions to rebuild collagen. Each session builds on the last one. That’s why results happen step by step, not all at once.

Most patients have more than one scar type. Your provider will check all of them at your consultation. Then they’ll build your plan.

What Affects Your Number of Sessions

Scar depth and age. Deeper, older scars usually need more sessions than newer, shallow ones.

How fast your skin heals. Everyone rebuilds skin at a different rate. Your age, family traits, sun exposure, and skincare habits all play a role.

Active acne. If you have active breakouts, we treat those first. This helps your results and healing.

Your goals. Some patients want smoother skin and less visible scarring. Others also want to improve fine lines or pores. Your goals help shape your plan.

Adding other treatments. PRF, chemical peels, or HydraFacial can boost your results. This may change your total number of sessions.

Spacing between sessions. Sessions spaced too close together don’t give your skin time to heal. Sessions spaced too far apart can slow your progress.

What to Expect, Session by Session

Sessions 1-2: Your skin adjusts to treatment. Early changes in texture and tone may be subtle.

Sessions 3-4: Your skin keeps rebuilding. Many patients see smoother skin and shallower scars.

Sessions 5-6: Your results keep improving. This is true for deeper rolling or boxcar scars. Some patients switch to touch-ups after this point.

Your skin often keeps improving for months after your last visit. That’s because your body keeps rebuilding collagen after treatment ends.

Can PRF Improve Your Results?

For many patients, yes. PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin. We make it from a small sample of your own blood. It’s full of platelets and growth factors that help repair tissue. When we add PRF during microneedling, it reaches deeper into your skin. This can mean faster healing and stronger collagen rebuilding.

Patients with medium to severe scarring often benefit most from PRF. Your provider will help you decide if it’s right for you.

Microneedling vs. Other Treatments

Microneedling alone can improve your skin’s texture. But pairing it with other treatments can speed up or improve your results:

  • Chemical peels treat surface color and acne marks. Microneedling works on deeper skin layers.
  • HydraFacial adds hydration and preps your skin between sessions.
  • PRF, EZ Gel, and Exosome Therapy are advanced options that boost collagen even further.

How long should I wait between sessions? Wait 4 to 6 weeks between sessions. This gives your skin time to heal and rebuild collagen.

Can one session remove acne scars? No. One session can improve your skin’s texture. But scars fade over a series of treatments, not all at once.

Is microneedling better than chemical peels for acne scars? They work in different ways. Microneedling works on deeper skin layers. Chemical peels treat surface texture and color. Many patients use both.

Is PRF microneedling better than traditional microneedling? PRF can add extra collagen support and help you heal faster. It uses growth factors from your own blood. Your provider can tell you if it’s right for your skin.

Can older acne scars still improve with microneedling? Yes. Even scars from years ago can improve with the right treatment plan. Deeper scars usually need more sessions.

Is microneedling painful? Most patients feel mild discomfort or light scratching. We use numbing cream before treatment.
